Novotorium Offers Entrepreneurs Free Business

February 22, 2012 · Posted in Houses · Comments Off

Langhorne, PA (PRWEB) February 22, 2012

Entrepreneurs who are launching and growing emerging businesses will benefit from new business acceleration programs and co-work days offered by Novotorium, a center for entrepreneurs that offers a collaborative work environment, a full-time professional staff, and a network of experienced entrepreneurs and advisers, according to Mike Krupit, who heads up Novotorium.

These new programs ? offered at no charge ? will help entrepreneurs become more effective at growing their businesses, while at the same time connecting with Novotorium?s supporting partners and in-house team. Entrepreneurs will also have the opportunity to meet with and work alongside of other entrepreneurs who may be experiencing similar challenges.

?Based on the overwhelming success of programs we launched during our first three months, we wanted to extend our reach and services to more entrepreneurs and emerging companies, Krupit said. ?We focus on helping entrepreneurs develop long-term, sustainable growth in their businesses, and believe our programs can be transformational experiences.?

The new Business Acceleration Groups are small groups of entrepreneurs and young businesses (about 8-10 in each group). Entrepreneurs participate in a condensed incubation program for two days every month. Companies will be grouped based on their relative stage, from ?Seed? to ?Launch.? The two days will be spent as would any incubation ? mentoring, classes, partner office hours, and collaboration. The goal is to give the companies a boost to help keep them moving forward. Groups will remain consistent to allow members to build lasting relationships.

Two Business Acceleration Groups have already been formed ? the first ?Launch? group starts February 29. There are a few openings in the first ?Seed? group scheduled to begin March 14. Novotorium is actively recruiting more entrepreneurs and companies to start more groups.

Co-Work Wednesdays will begin in March. Novotorium will open its doors as a co-work space every other Wednesday, providing desks, Internet, camaraderie, and snacks. There is no cost, but registration is required. (Pickup from Langhorne SEPTA station is available.)

In addition to these programs, Novotorium is also offering a class, ?Strong Product Management,? 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., February 29. The class will help entrepreneurs better understand product management, and will be led by Anita Garimella Andrews of Sepiida, an online marketing firm that provides analytics implementation & analysis, conversion rate optimization, and product management services. Registration for this event is required.

Novotorium?s original full incubation program continues to be available to select businesses that have already launched and are working on developing long-term, sustainable growth. The business incubation program runs for an initial period of three months, and includes: workspace, individualized mentorship and guidance from Novotorium staff and partners, and use of facilities (including internet access, kitchen, gym and napping pod). At the end of the three-month period, Novotorium may offer to continue incubation and make a capital investment into the business.

Admission to all Novotorium programs is available on a rolling basis. Those interested in applying may find more information and a registration form on the Novotorium website.

?Novotorium is offering a unique combination of opportunities unprecedented in the Philadelphia region ? and perhaps anywhere,? said Krupit. ?These are powerful experiences in a collaborative entrepreneurial experience with real benefits for all who participate. We expect to be at capacity for our programs, so we encourage people to apply and register right away.?

Dropkick Murphys

Now in their 14th year, the Dropkick Murphys have risen from their basic Irish-punk roots to become a rocking & rolling, raging, green-clover machine. Dropkick Murphys are now one of the best-known rock bands in the world, thanks in part to their ability to tap into the working-class and sports fan culture that permeates Boston and the New England area but even more so due to their reputation for phenomenal live shows. Each year the band breaks house records when their live shows celebrating St. Patrick's Day go on sale. These shows are the peak of the band's touring calendar and every year fans from all over the world travel to Boston just for a chance to become part of this unique experience. In 2003 the band released a live album that has so far sold over a quarter of a million copies worldwide. This updated recording is volume two of the series comprising a "best of" or "greatest hits" from the extensive Dropkick Murphys catalog of albums. The material on this album focuses on the band's most recent titles and includes a live rendition of their most popular and instantly recognizable platinum selling single "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" as well as popular tracks like "The State of Massachusetts," the Red Sox anthem "Tessie," St Patrick's Day sing-along "Kiss Me, I'm Sh*tfaced" and the tearjerker sing-along "Forever." Recorded over six nights and seven shows in March 2009, this live CD and Hi-Def DVD package puts the band's hot-ticket live-show experience in your own home. What makes this band band truly remarkable? Their insightful lyrics? Memorable melodies? Blow-your-mind live performances? Dropkick Murphys are all of those things along with their boundless enthusiasm, infectious energy and supreme devotion to their loyal fans. Fans who have been eagerly awaiting this release.

By pitching their music somewhere between the arena-friendly style of U2 and the mature pop/rock of bands like Maroon 5 and Counting Crows, the Fray rose to commercial prominence with their 2005 debut, How to Save a Life. The Denver-based band had formed three years prior, when former schoolmates Isaac Slade (vocals, piano) and Joe King (guitar, vocals) unexpectedly bumped into each other at a local music store. The pair began a series of two-man jam sessions and soon expanded their lineup with two of Slade's former bandmates, drummer Ben Wysocki and guitarist David Welsh. Slade's younger brother, Caleb, also joined the band for a stint but was ultimately asked to leave; the resulting rift between the two siblings would later inspire the band's first hit single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)." After issuing the Movement EP in 2002, the quartet gained the support of Denver's KTCL radio station with a follow-up release, 2003's Reason EP. As the Fray's airplay increased alongside their local profile (Westworld, a Denver alt. weekly publication, deemed them "Best New Band" in 2004), they began attracting attention from Epic Records. The label ultimately signed the band in December 2004, and the Fray toured alongside Weezer and Ben Folds the following summer.

How to Save a Life was released in September 2005, and "Over My Head (Cable Car)" found a quick home on modern rock radio. By early 2006, it had crossed over to Top 40 chart status, peaking at number eight and whetting the public's appetite for another hit. The Fray responded by releasing the album's title track, which was heavily used in a promotional campaign for the TV series Grey's Anatomy and quickly became one of 2006's biggest singles. "How to Save a Life" was a world-wide smash, reaching the Top Ten in the U.S. (where it continued to chart for 58 consecutive weeks) and peaking at number one in Bulgaria, Ireland, Canada, and Spain. By the time the smoke had cleared, the Fray's debut had been certified double-platinum in the U.S. and was declared the best-selling digital album of all time.

As How to Save a Life continued to enjoy world-wide chart success, the live album Live at the Electric Factory was released in selected independent stores in July 2006. The Fray re-released their Reason EP the following year while continuing to tour, occasionally playing new material at their high-profile shows. The band also found time to return to the recording studio, and 2009 saw the release of their self-titled sophomore effort, The Fray. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide

    About Scars on 45

Making music was the furthest thing from Scars on 45's frontman/songwriter, Danny Bemrose's, mind until the professional soccer player for England's Huddersfield Town F.C. broke his foot at 21 and his world came crashing down. "I was in limbo, without knowing what to do with myself," he says. It wasn't the first time that fate would intervene in the band's formation.

Danny put down the soccer ball and picked up for his father's guitar. "I'm quite an obsessive person. I became kind of addicted," he says. "I used to lock myself away to write songs and record on four-track recorder."

Those early "recordings" eventually led to the creation of Scars on 45, a quintet from Bradford, England, that combines the gentle melodic intensity of Snow Patrol or Keane with the added allure of co-ed vocals, provided by Danny and fellow lead vocalist Aimee Driver. The self-produced "Give Me Something" EP is Scars on 45's first proper release and serves as an introduction to the band in advance of their forthcoming full length.

Throughout the four-track collection, Danny and Aimee's voices weave around each other, creating not only beautiful harmonies but an added emotional dynamic to the storytelling found in the songs. Opening with the lilting, yet melancholic title track, the pair search for some sign–any sign–that there's a reason to believe in a lasting love. "Everyone's been in that situation of wanting someone and it not being reciprocated," Danny says. "It just rules your entire life."

Other highlights on the "Give Me Something" EP include the propulsive "Loudest Alarm," a B-side from the album recording sessions, as well as a gentle, acoustic rendition of "Don't Say," another track that the band had originally recorded for the album (and perform live) in a grander, more fully orchestrated form. The melodic chorus of "The Way That We Are" is both fresh and at once comfortably familiar.

Taking their name from an Emmylou Harris radio interview Danny had heard, Scars on 45 initially began as a trio made up of Bemrose, his football buddy/bassist Stuart Nichols, and keyboardist David "Nova" Nowakowski, with other members coming and going. Having no public performing experience, Amy was a friend of Nova's who originally came in to lay down some female vocal tracks for one of Danny's compositions. Her voice would become an integral element in the band's sound.

Then began a series of joys, heartbreaks and near misses. The band, now expanded to a quintet with the addition of Chris on drums, placed songs on A&E's since-cancelled series, "The Cleaner," and came close to signing a record deal only to see it fall apart at the last moment. Then came the moment they had been waiting for: "CSI: New York" selected the group's song, "Beauty's Running Wild," for an extended closing scene. The music caught the attention of noted music supervisor, Alexandra Patsavas, who signed the band to her Atlantic Records-distributed label, Chop Shop Records.

Although enjoyable, the studio is "the work part," Danny says whereas the real fun comes in playing live. "Just to be able to put yourself out there and let people know who you are is wonderful," he continues. "What I write about is who I am really. When people listen and react to one of your songs, there's no better feeling."

Cursive
Event on 2012-02-24 20:00:00

Supporting Acts: Ume, VIRGIN ISLANDS

Cursive

Cursive is the longtime trio of Tim Kasher (vocals, guitar), Matt Maginn (bass), and Ted Stevens (guitar, vocals), with Patrick Newbery (keys) and Cully Symington (drums). I Am Gemini (out February 21, 2012 via Saddle Creek), the band's seventh LP, is the follow-up to 2009's critically praised Mama, I'm Swollen, which caught the attention of publications including Alternative Press, Billboard, Playboy, Rolling Stone, and Time Out New York, among others, and earned the band their network television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman. Cursive has released six full-length albums – including the heralded Cursive's Domestica (2000), The Ugly Organ (2003), and Happy Hollow (2006) – two EPs, a disc of rarities, and numerous singles since the band's 1995 inception. The band is also known for their vital, magnetic live show, earning rave reviews from outlets including the Cleveland Scene's C-Note music blog ("[Tim Kasher's] effect on the crowd was chilling last night…Cursive was focused and on-spot, composed and gripping"), Nuvo Weekly ("…the five-piece slashed through a near-perfect set of songs from their last nine years of albums"), and the Orlando Sentinel's Soundboard blog ("…the band still knows how to rock on stage…[Cursive] thrashed away with an abandon that heightened the passion of Kasher's dense, emotionally charged wordplay."). I Am Gemini is the surreal and powerful musical tale of Cassius and Pollock, twin brothers separated at birth. One good and one evil, their unexpected reunion in a house that is not a home ignites a classic struggle for the soul, played out with a cast of supporting characters that includes a chorus of angels and devils, and twin sisters conjoined at the head. Recorded in the summer/fall of 2011 at Omaha, NE's ARC Studios and mixed at Red Room in Seattle, WA with producer Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Minus The Bear, Isis), I Am Gemini marks the first time front man Tim Kasher, holding the completed story already in mind, wrote album lyrics in a linear fashion, in order, from song 1 to song 13. The result is thirteen singularly cohesive song chapters that blend effortlessly into one unique narrative. The moody and playfully sinister I Am Gemini is Cursive's musically heaviest in years, with alternately muscular and angular guitars, pounding drums and driving bass. From the eerie introductory sounds of epic barnstormer "This House Alive" and the irresistibly catchy, insistent "The Sun and Moon", to the searing "Double Dead" and the split personality prog-pop of "Twin Dragon/Hello Skeleton", to the roaring, mournful closing track "Eulogy for No Name", the album is a dynamic, mind-bending, and imaginative ride.

Yelawolf

Envision a humid world of slow-rolling Monte Carlos and slaughter houses; meth labs and rusting Mossberg's, inked up arms and haircuts that look like they've been chopped by hatchets. Trunk Muzik. Southern Pine trees, smoking pine, and pine boxes. Call him Catfish Billy or Yelawolf, just don't go make him go pop the trunk on you. Enter Yelawolf's Alabama-a backwoods badlands of sinners and salvation. He claims Gadsden, but he's from everywhere. Born Michael Wayne Atha to an absentee father and a bartender mother, he attended over 15 schools while soaking up slang and spiritualism in Baton Rouge, Antioch, Tennessee, and Atlanta. While trying to stay afloat in a turbulent home life addled by drug and alcohol abuse, he discovered rap music in Tennessee and it soon became an obsession, along with the classic rock (Lynard Skynard, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers) that he was raised on. "When I lived in Antioch, they'd bus us down to the projects in Nashville to go to school and everything just started clicking with me with rap music and in life," Yelawolf said. "I felt the connection, these kids had the same problems that I had at home. And the weed, the dope…" His music is a new strain of soul food, the traditional Southern cuisine that fortified the Dungeon Family, 8ball & MJG and UGK, but infused by Yela's unique experiences as a cross-country vagabond with no place to call home. And, of course, his unparalleled ability to snap off double-timed staccato raps unlike anything you've ever heard. His manager bestowed him with the nickname Joe Dirt because his experiences are so unbelievable. There was the stint commercial fishing in Alaska. An attempt to become a professional skateboarder in Berkeley thwarted by various injuries. Time spent in Seattle and New York, and of course, spots all over the South. The cross-country Greyhound tours around the country like a modern-day Jack Kerouac with the rhyme skills of LL Cool J circa the "Jack the Ripper" era. Finally settling back down in Gadsden, Yelawolf hooked up with Gheto-O-Vision, who helped him land a deal with Columbia in 2007. Suddenly, the last 20 years of life as a vagabond seemed to be at an end. Yet the perpetual state of chaos soon re-emerged, when Rick Rubin took over the label and started cutting artists left and right. Before he had the opportunity to even finish his debut album or prove himself on a large scale, he was unceremoniously dropped. "It was frustrating. I was just like, 'you don't get it? Alright, that's cool, then I guess I'm extra special," Yelawolf said. "I had to be arrogant because I could have been fucked up. I mean, Rick Rubin didn't like me? But that's just not my style. I refuse to quit." The only solution was to go harder, taking his anger at being slighted and turning it into something undeniable. He dropped a flurry of mixtapes, including "Stereo," which found him riffing on old classic rock cuts from Fleetwood Mac to Pink Floyd to Heart. But while he continued to build a fan base with each release, something was missing. "Not everybody in hip-hop messes with classic rock. There was no real element of surprise. I'm from Alabama, I'm into classic rock – it was obvious and there was no shock-value to it," Yelawolf said. "After that, I wanted to focus on making sure that people understood that I respected the craft. "Trunk Muzik" was dedicated to the trunk riders, with 808s and hard ass music. It had a dirty Southern sound, and it opened things up. Which is something of an understatement. "Trunk Muzik" dropped on January 1st, 2010, and within a matter of weeks, he was the toast of every blog. The New York Times raved about a live performance, describing him as "fully ascendant" and "striking and assured." The LA Times declared he was "as safe a bet for stardom as anyone out right now – the rare rapper capable of earning respect from both Kid Rock and Kid Cudi fans." His insanely energetic performances at SXSW were the stuff of instant-legend. Songs like "I Wish" and "Good to Go" found Yela capable of going toe to toe with lyrical giants Bun B and Raekwon. While "Pop the Trunk" epitomized his 808-heavy trunk rattling sound, full of vivid pictures of rural redneck life and violence lurking around every bend. But Interscope didn't just offer him a deal only to tell stories about the South. There are a million rappers capable of doing just that. But none of them can match Yelawolf's versatility. Whether he's rapping over the beat for Cypress Hill's "Ain't Goin' Out Like That," Gucci Mane's "Lemonade," or The Doors' "Waiting for the Sun," Yela has the ability to adapt his style to each song. He doesn't kick 48-bar freestyles, he re-interprets the song to fit a new meaning. He can spit with the most lyrical underground types or he can write an upbeat party anthem like "I Just Wanna Party," alongside Gucci Mane. "I can go any direction – arena rap or even the bluegrass hip-hop shit. I would never sign myself down to any style," Yelawolf said. "I'm always gonna have the darker edgy music – it is always in my pocket because it comes so natural to me. You'll never stop getting records like "Pop the Trunk" or "Good to Go" – the crunk south stuff. It will always be a part of what I do in some way. But I plan on evolving. You have to. I'm out to make long lasting records."

The Foreclosure Of America

The Foreclosure of America: The Inside Story of the Rise and Fall of Countrywide Home Loans, the Mortage Crisis, and the Default of the American Dream

From Countrywide’s former Senior VP of Marketing, the first engrossing inside look at Countrywide Home Loans, how the mortgage crisis started-and where it may end.In July 2004, Adam Michaelson entered “The Vault”-an underground bunker at Countrywide headquarters-for a meeting about a new loan product that would allow borrowers to pay less than their minimum monthly payment. After the “finance jocks” proudly made their case, Michaelson asked one question: “Are you nuts?” Countrywide’s decision-makers believed these new exotic loans were “worth the risk.” The booming housing market would only get bigger, with ever-increasing home values supporting homeowners in a never-ending cycle of borrowing against the virtual value of their homes and refinancing later. They were dead wrong. With both an insider’s knowledge and thorough reporting on the ripple effects on American families and the economy, this fascinating, witty, and wide-ranging book not only examines the morality of a career spent marketing mirages and the market forces that destroyed a company, but addresses the question that everyone is asking: can corporations serve the public good and profit at the same time? Most importantly, it offers creative thinking on how to prevent such a meltdown from ever happening again.
